SECHENOV UNIVERSITY COMPLETE HUMAN TRIALS FOR CORONAVIRUS VACCINE

The TASS news agency of Russia said on July 10, the phase-I clinical trials will end on July 15. And, while the phase-II will begin today, that is July 13. “They tested an inward treatment of the first group of volunteers for the tolerability and safety of the cure. So, it will end on July 15,”.

PHASE-II VACCINE TRIALS

This is phase-II, where they test ‘efficiency and immunogenicity (generation of immune response)’. But, researchers see whether cure is triggering the desired immune response in humans. And, what could be its suitable doses to generate this response.

WHAT IF PHASE-II TRIALS SUCCEED?

Usually, vaccine development involves the third phase. No cure for large-scale use got approved without the third phase of trials till now. It’s not clear whether the Russian candidate vaccine would go through phase-III trials.

But recently, a candidate vaccine developed in China has approved for use after phase-II trials. But it’s supposed to get administered only on army personnel as of now. It depends on Russian authorities to decide if they would need phase III trials.

CANDIDATE VACCINE TRIALS IN RUSSIA

There are over 150 candidate vaccines for coronavirus developed all over the world. And, half of these are still in pre-clinical stages. So, that means they are being tried on animals or are still in the early stages of development. And, about 15 cures are in phase-I trials and ten in phase-II trials. Three cures are in phase-III trials.

The Gamalei center’s director Alexander Gintsburg told TASS that he hopes the cure will ‘enter civil circulation’ on August 12-14. Also, adding that private companies may begin mass production by September, The Moscow Times reported.

The World Health Organization’s protocols said a vaccine has to go through 3 phases. Before getting approval for a large-scale production. WHO’s draft of coronavirus vaccines lists the Russian candidate cure study as a phase 1 trial.

To date, no cure got approval for large-scale use without undergoing the 3rd phase. And, which is the largest in terms of the number of participants. A candidate vaccine usually undergoes industrial production. If the last phase shows clear and definitive evidence of its safety and efficacy.

WHAT WILL HAPPEN AFTER THE PHASE-III TRIALS?

Even after the successful completion of phase-III. It takes several months before a cure is accessible to the general public. Also, it requires several rounds of regulatory and administrative approvals. Several scientists, and WHO, have been maintaining that it would take at least 12-18 months. Before, any other Coronavirus vaccine is able to hit the market.

Also, if it’s ready, still it will take time to get available to all at one go. It’s expected to make available only to people who are at higher risk of getting the infection. They include healthcare workers and others. Universal immunization can take several years, just like others.

Russia is one of the several nations racing against time to develop a cure against COVID-19. And, which has so far claimed at least 569,879 lives and infected about 12,992,640 people worldwide.
