TikTok has more than 100 million (10 crores) monthly active users in India. Notably, when the TikTok app was blocked in India for a week in 2019, ByteDance, the company which developed TikTok, had said in a court filing that it was losing more than $5,00,000 (9Rs 3.7 Crore) a day in the nation. According to a report, TikTok users in India spent over 5.5 billion (550 Crore) hours on TikTok in 2019. Another report said that TikTok’s monthly active users increased by 90 percent to 81 million by December 2019. In December 2019, the time spent on Tiktok in India was more than the next 11 countries combined.

What will be the impact on TikTok users in India?

Since the TikTok ban came into effect on Monday. A large number of TikTok creators or TikTok influencers have started posting videos from their profiles asking users to follow them on Instagram. Some of them have also provided their YouTube channel details in the videos so that people would continue to watch their creations, despite the absence of TikTok. Various TikTok influencers have also made videos to teach users about how, to begin with, Instagram, and follow them on the platform.

Similarly, there is a sharp increase in views of the hashtag #TikTokBan on TikTok. Some TikTok influencers suggesting their Instagram profiles and YouTube channels are also using the same hashtag. There are also some videos on TikTok asking users to manually download their favorite videos from the platform that has over 20 crore users in the country.

To answer the question of whether the TikTok ban will affect the creators, the answer is yes. Other than the bogus videos, there were showcasing of real talent as well. And also a source of information for many. The short and quick clips were easy to share and ripe with information. Losing a major platform is not easy to take in. The company denied sharing user information “with any foreign government, including the Chinese Government. Further, if we are requested to in the future we would not do so”.

So, It remains unclear how the ban will be enforced and how long it could last. This is not the first time TikTok ban or has run into trouble with the Indian government. The app was briefly blocked in India last year after a court ruled it could expose children to sexual predators, pornography, and cyberbullying. The app was reinstated after a week after the company successfully appealed the court’s decision.

The app head in India Nikhil Gandhi said, “The government of India has issued an interim order for the blocking of 59 apps, including TikTok as TikTok users in India has reached 100 million and we are in the process of complying with it. We have been to meet with concerned government stakeholders for an opportunity to respond and submit clarifications. TikTok continues to comply with all data privacy and security requirements under Indian law. It has not shared any information about our users in India with any foreign government, including the Chinese Government. Further, if we are requested to in the future, we could not do so. We place the highest importance on user privacy and integrity,”
