1. Manish Malhotra – Is One From The Famous Indian Fashion Designers In India
Bollywood’s favorite fashion designer, Manish Malhotra was born in London. He gained access to the industry as a model while he was studying at Elphinstone College, Mumbai. When it comes to international celebrities, he has designed clothes for Michael Jackson, when he came to India for a Bollywood event.
2. Tarun Tahiliani
Tarun Tahiliani did his schooling from Doon School and obtained a management degree from the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton Business School. In 1987, he inaugurated “Ensemble”, the first Indian fashion boutique.
He holds the title of the first Indian fashion designer to get invited to present his designs at the Milan Fashion Week. He has international clients such as Lady Gaga, Naomi Campbell, Oprah Winfrey, and many more.
3. Sabyasachi Mukherjee
Sabyasachi, Bollywood’s dearest fashion designer, completed his graduation from NIFT Kolkata in 1999. He holds the title of the youngest board member of the National Museum of Indian Cinema as well as one among the Associate Designer Members of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI).
Mukherjee sells his merchandise under the label – Sabyasachi and is very famous for his work. He has designed clothes for many Bollywood films that include Black, Paa, Guzaarish, Babul, etc. he has also designed clothes for the wedding of different celebrities including Anushka Sharma and Virat Kohli.
4. Rohit Bal
Born and brought up in Kashmir, Rohit Bal did his schooling from Srinagar’s Burn Hall School and completed his graduation in History from St. Stephens College. After which he took admission in NIFT.
He began his career as a fashion designer in 1986 along with his brother Rajiv Bal under the company Orchid Overseas Pvt. Ltd. Four years down the line, he started designing on his own. Rohit is famous for designing for the popular show – Kaun Banega Crorepati. Hollywood celebrities like Uma Thurman, Pamela Anderson, Anna Kournikova, Naomi Campbell are some of his clients.
5. Manish Arora
Born and brought up in Mumbai, Manish Arora graduated from NIFT, New Delhi with the ‘Best Student Award’ in 1994.
He is known as the ‘John Galliano of India’, and started his own label ‘Manish Arora’ in 1997. His long list of collaborations includes distinguished brands like Swarovski, Walt Disney, Barbie, Reebok, MAC Cosmetics, Nivea, etc. famous international personalities such as Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, etc. are some of the admirers of Manish’s creations, and have worn outfits designed by him.
He is among the few Indian designers who have been part of the French fashion house – Paco Rabanne in 2011 and was appointed as the creative director there.
6. Ritu Beri
Ritu Beri did her schooling from Army Public School (New Delhi), and pursued Economics Honours from Lady Shri Ram College in 1987 and joined NIFT New Delhi after completing her graduation. She also pursued embroidery training from Francois Lesage.
In 1990, she launched her own label- Lavanya. The famous names who have worn her designs include Prince Charles, Bill Clinton, Langes Swarovski & The Swarovski family, Madhuri Dixit, Preity Zinta, and many more. Ritu is popularly known as the first Asian fashion designer to head Jean-Louis Scherrer- the French fashion brand.
7. Wendell Rodricks
Rodricks started his career in the hospitality domain and later entered the fashion industry. He worked as an intern at the National Museum of Costume and Fashion in Lisbon and the Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology, New York.
He came back to India in 1988 after completing the training and designed for notable companies like Garden Vareli, Lakme, and De Beers. In 1990, he successfully launched his own designer label named– Wendell Roderick. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2014 for his exemplary contribution to the design and fashion industry.
8. Neeta Lulla
Neeta graduated from SNDT University, Mumbai, and stepped into this field as an assistant to the famous Indian fashion choreographer, Jeanne Naoroji.
She entered Bollywood by designing clothes for the film ‘Tamasha’ with Kimi Katkar. To date, she has designed outfits for over 350 national and international films. She has styled Bollywood celebrities including Aishwarya Rai Bachhan, Juhi Chawla, Priyanka Chopra, Rajinikanth, Shah Rukh Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Aamir Khan, just to name a few.
9. Rina Dhaka
Rina graduated from Government College for Girls, Chandigarh, and did a training project with Intercraft, one of the biggest garment exporters of India. Rina entered the fashion industry as a model and took the first step into fashion designing by setting up a boutique for her friend. Popular national and international personalities like Uma Thruman, Naomi Campbell, Molly Sims, Diana Hayden, Lara Dutta, etc. are some of the famous names included in her clientele.
10. JJ Valaya
Jagsharan Jit Singh Ahluwalia, known as JJ Valaya, did his graduation in Commerce from Chandigarh, but his inclination towards the design industry made him join NIFT Delhi in 1989. He graduated with awards to his name like The Thapar-Dupont Medal, The Elyxa award, KLM-NIFT Trophy, and Prix de Incitation (Paris) in 1991.
After graduation, he started his own label along with his brother TJ (Tribhavan Jit) Singh. He is the first global brand ambassador of Swarovski, as well as the founding member of the Fashion Design Council of India (FDCI). World-famous celebs like Cate Blanchett, Joseph Fiennes, Kareena Kapoor, and Hrithik Roshan have worn garments designed by him.
